Poleng

A family workshop about the contradictions

in the Indonesian identity

For who?

  • For everyone who likes more than only painting.
  • Group sizes: 10 – 12 persons (dependant on the space)

By who?

  • Expressive artist Edith Bons has worked since her graduation in 1985 with the "collagetechniek". She has developed this techique so that in her paintings no more difference between the applied material and painting can be distinguished.
  • Also substantive there is such a merger. Her Indonesian context and Dutch shaping are added togther by the used plastic elements.
  • The polengmotief runs as a red wire through her oeuvre.
  • Edith Bons also is a teacher on a primary school. For extra information on her work look at the menu item : About Edith

The polengmotief

This motive, Edith has seen on the Indonesian island Bali. It exists from black and white areas. It is applied in holy cloths intended for the many ceremonies which this Hindoeistic island has.

It stands symbol for the cosmic duality. Edith bons has claimed this as a symbol for her Indonesian identity, always balancing between two contradictions: East West/Indonesia-Netherland/Motherland-Fatherland/etc. The Polengmotief will be a red wire in the workshop and will especially be expressed in the choice of the material which will be made by the participant. From the result will become clear which spot you have in the Dutch and Indonesia/India.
